Ember Mug 2: the smart mug for a very real luxury problem
My experience with the Ember Mug 2 in the home office: holding temperature, not forgetting coffee and why a smart mug is less silly than it sounds.
Published · April 10, 2026

A smart mug sounds like the final boss of unnecessary tech.
I get it.
A mug has been a pretty solved problem for a few thousand years. Liquid in, drink, done.
And yet I regularly sit in my home office, forget my coffee, take a sip and get reminded that room temperature is not a flavor.
The Ember Mug 2 solves exactly this very small, very real luxury problem.
What it does
The idea is simple: you set a drinking temperature, and the mug keeps your drink warm.
Not boiling hot.
Not "I underestimated the microwave".
Just pleasantly drinkable.
On the coaster, it stays ready. Away from the coaster, the battery lasts for a while depending on the size. Ember says the Mug 2 can hold temperature for up to 1.5 hours with the smaller version and around 80 minutes with the larger one.
That is more than enough for my everyday life, because my problem is not an eight-hour coffee. My problem is a coffee I forgot for 20 minutes too long.
Why it makes sense in the home office
In an office, you often drink coffee while moving somewhere.
In the home office, it sits next to the keyboard and waits for me to disappear into a problem.
A debugging loop, a longer call, a message that was supposed to be a quick reply, and suddenly good coffee has become a sad brown memory.
The Ember Mug 2 does not stop me from getting distracted.
But it punishes me less for it.
That is nice of it.
What I like about it
- Coffee stays in the good window. Not too hot, not lukewarm, just drinkable.
- It is unspectacular in daily use. Put it on the coaster, use it, done.
- The app does not feel mandatory. Set it once, then I do not need to keep playing with it.
- It makes a small ritual better. That sounds cheesy, but it is true.
The honest downsides
It is expensive for a mug.
There is no way to make that sound reasonable.
It is also not a travel thermos and not something you throw into the dishwasher without thinking. It wants to be treated a little more consciously than a normal mug from the kitchen cabinet.
And yes: you could simply drink coffee faster.
Theoretically.
Would I recommend it?
Yes, but not to everyone.
If you drink coffee or tea immediately anyway, save the money. But if you regularly sit next to a half-forgotten mug like I do, the Ember Mug 2 is surprisingly pleasant.
It is not a necessary gadget.
It is a comfort gadget.
But a very good one.
✦The Ember Mug 2 is completely unnecessary until you use it. After that, cold coffee feels personal.
